About Professor Dr. S. S. K. Marthandam (1941–2011)

Dr. S. S. K. Marthandam began his medical career at a Primary Health Centre in the Tirunelveli district, later serving at the Government General Hospital and the Royapettah Government Hospital in Chennai. He went on to join Sri Ramachandra University, where he distinguished himself and eventually became the Vice-Chancellor.

Regarded as a trusted advisor by several Chief Ministers and prominent politicians, Prof. Marthandam made major contributions to orthopaedic surgery in India. He pioneered many advanced techniques and therapies for musculoskeletal disorders, especially focusing on arthritis.

As a clinician-researcher, he was passionate about translating scientific research into practical treatments. One of his most notable achievements was pioneering cell-based therapies for arthritis: he led the culture of human chondrocytes using a novel TGP (thermo-gelling polymer) scaffold, which was among the first such efforts in India. This work laid the foundation for transplantation of cartilage tissue in patients suffering from arthritis.

Beyond his clinical and academic excellence, his compassion for patients and his drive for scientific innovation left a lasting legacy. Though he passed away in 2011, his vision continues to inspire orthopaedic research and patient care by his disciples.

About Dr. S. Muthukumar

Dr. S. Muthukumar, Chairman and Founder of Parvathy Hospital, was deeply inspired by the legacy of Prof. S. S. K. Marthandam and established this institution in his memory. The current facility boasts over 150 beds, houses more than 100 doctors, and supports 35+ specialties. It is fully accredited by the NABH, underlining its commitment to high-quality care.

In 2004, the hospital was established in its more developed form and has since become a center of excellence for orthopaedics, level-1 trauma, and specialized services including arthroplasty, spine surgery, foot & ankle surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, arthroscopy and sports injuries

Parvathy Hospital also places a strong emphasis on medical education: as of 2024, it offers two DNB orthopaedics seats, along with institutional fellowships.
